Advantech OPC Server Delivers Plug and Play Connectivity for Industrial Automation

The Advantech OPC (OLE for Process Control) server is now available for ordering and shipment. This OPC server conforms to OPC standards, and provides immediate compatibility between Advantech I/O system and a very wide range of application software system. Any software application with OPC client capabilities can easily access Advantech distributed/remote data acquisition devices, including ADAM-4000, ADAM-5000/485 and ADAM-5000/CAN modules, through the Advantech OPC server.

OLE Automation Technology

The Advantech OPC server exposes its functionality to other OLE applications through its interfaces, which means you can create custom OLE applications to access or control the driver. For example, you can use Visual Basic, VBA and Visual C++ to create custom OLE applications.

Event-driven Architecture

The Advantech OPC server is event-based rather than time-based, reducing idle time and increasing performance.

OLE for Process Control Compliance

The Advantech OPC Server complies with the OLE for Process Control (OPC) Ver 1.01a standard. Any OPC client application can access process hardware data through the I/O server.

The Advantech OPC Server has built-in diagnostics. It performs life checks on itself periodically to see that its own OPC server is on-line and it notifies the user if it is not. It also acts as a data monitor that can tell what items and optics are active in an application, and it can provide values that it receives from another OPC server.

Rich Software Support

The Advantech OPC server's Visual Basic example programs and Visual C++ OPC client program codes can support users developing their own OPC Client applications. With these application codes, users just update the codes -related I/O accesses section of a program. They need not be connected to OLE related technology. The OPC client applications are generated automatically.
In order to assure interoperability with other OPC systems, Advantech has tested the Advantech OPC server with many OPC client compliant software packages. The connectivity test results are listed in the table below:

OPC defines an open industry standard interface based on Microsoft ActiveX and OLE technology that provides interoperability among disparate field devices, automation/control software, and business systems.
