Can I Make Permanent Changes to the System?
Since the first Windows Embedded operating system based on a desktop version, a technology set called "Write Filters" has been included. Write filters are an Embedded Enabling Feature and provide the ability for the operating system and all applications to run in a read only mode, meaning that by default no changes are made to the protected disk. By design, when the system is restarted, all changes made to the system and files are lost and the system returns to its original state. Since the Write Filter Operation is only applicable when the Windows Embedded Standard OS is running, changes can be made to the system in an "offline" manner when the system drive is accessed from another system. Optionally permanent changes can also be made to the system when the system is running through a number of provided utilities and a programming API and custom written software. |
