Railway Signal Monitoring System

Transportation
Xi’an, China

Project Introduction:
Railway signal monitoring systems take advantage of high-speed information processing capabilities of a microcomputer to supply continuous, comprehensive and automatic real-time monitoring. As a result, they provide complete and continuous real-time data, which increases signal monitoring quality and further helps prevent accidents. Meanwhile, having such a large quantity of data can be quite helpful in analyzing accidents and reviewing equipment status. This railway signal monitoring system acquires relevant switching values (key operation, track light ribbons, switch position, semaphore status, etc.) and analog values (railway voltage, switch position, voltage of each power supply, etc.) to build a comprehensive database.

System Requirements:
The customer had a strict set of requests which led to the following solution requirements:

  • 4U Industrial PC with strong anti-electromagnet resistance and high reliability
  • Easy expansion of I/O ports; software should be based on B/S structure and support remote maintenance
  • Real-time control of state parameters, such as relevant switch values, analog values, etc.

Project Implementation:

System Description:
The system contains an IPC platform (IPC-610) and I/O expansion card (PCI-1710), which are used to acquire relevant switching and analog values to analyze and send feedback information. WebAccess takes the B/S structure and includes the following features:

  • Surveillance Functions: Real-time monitoring of equipment status through dynamic charts.
  • Control Functions: Set switch parameters through control commands and scripts.
  • Management Functions: System status through account management with reports and operation records.
  • Web Service Functions: Connects to SCADA Nodes via Internet/LAN by using browser to support remote monitoring.

IPC-610 is a 4U 19” rackmount industrial computer chassis. The unit includes a versatile passive backplane with 8 ISA, 4PCI, 2 PICMG slots, waterproof keyboard and touch pad. No extra keyboard or mouse is needed. The PCI-1710 is a multifunction DAS card with PCI bus interface. Its sampling rate can be up to 100KS/s. The card also has onboard 1K FIFO buffer. The card has 12-bit A/D converter, with up to 100 kHz sampling rate. PCI-1710 provides 16 single-ended or 8 differential analog inputs or a combina tion, 2 12-bit analog output channels and 16 digital inputs and outputs. IPC-610 is applied in HMI computer platform and DAS expansion platform. IPC-610 will output the display data to the engineer station when data is displayed. PCI-1752U controls breaker.

Conclusion:
Advantages of this Advantech solution include:

  1. IPC-610 possesses strong anti-electromagnetism capabilities with strong expandability
  2. Industrial multi-function cards provide stable performance, DI/O & AI/O functions and high integrity
  3. WebAccess configuration software supports remote management and maintenance via network
