Reliable Ethernet Switches for the Automatic Monitoring System of Traffic Violations
Project Introduction:
Modern cities have an increasing number of vehicles and therefore an increase in bad driving behavior. This causes traffic situations to rapidly deteriorate and makes the deployment of traffic enforcement systems with advanced information technology at major and minor thoroughfares a necessary measure. Like other metropolises, the Transport Department in Shunde District of Foshan City, China intended to establish a traffic enforcement system to automatically take video images of each vehicle violating a traffic regulation eg speeding, jumping red traffic lights, illegal left turns, etc. so as to improve traffic flow while enhancing management efficiency. However, unless the automatic monitoring system has a perfect performance and the on-site data is able to be transmitted to the traffic control center, all the cameras in the world are worthless. Advantech’s EKI serial products provide an easy way to build a reliable Ethernet network for such an automation system.
System Requirements:
For this project, an industry leader in deploying advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for municipal governments across China, was planning to upgrade its ITS to provide a better solution for their clients and one of the most important requirements was to find more stable network products to ensure transmission quality. Since the new solution would be installed at dozens of intersections and used to detect traffic violations whilst delivering instant and accurate information to the main control room, the ideal switches needed to have the following features:
- Multiple network ports for data transmission
- Compact and fanless design to fit the sealed electrical control cabinet, which due to its confined space easily causes fan failure
- Low power consumption with redundant power supply to avoid system crashes and frequent reboots because of an unstable power supply
- Wide temperature range to endure harsh outdoor environments
- Redundancy and faster recovery time to ensure the effective execution of traffic enforcement systems
- Support for multicast management to prevent unnecessary traffic delivery from wasting port bandwidth

System Description:
Compared with the system integrators previous solution, which had a lower recognition rate and less cameras, the upgraded version needed to handle a greater number of video cameras with higher resolution images. Therefore, Advantech proposed two managed redundant industrial Ethernet switches - EKI-7656C and EKI-4654R - to optimize network operation while providing software to monitor devices working statuses, allowing administrators to manage unexpected situations.
In order to meet the different requirements of intersections, the compact 16 port EKI-7656C can be mounted on a DIN-rail or wall and the 24 port EKI-4654R is a 1U 19" rack mount product. Both switches provide various interfaces to effortlessly connect with other devices such as an SFP port, fast Ethernet port and copper-wire port. With an auto MDI/MDIX function, the RJ-45 switch ports can be used as the "up-link" port which means that our products can connect to another switch or workstation without changing between straight through or crossover cabling.
As well as their compact fanless design, low power consumption and wide operating temperatures (EKI-7656C: -10~60°C / EKI-4654R: -40~85°C) which enables them to be used in outdoor space-limited environments, both models support the X-Ring protocol to provide redundant backup and reduce the recovery time to below 20ms; a dual-redundant power supply to reduce the risk of power failure and the long Mean Time Between Failures ( MTBF ) are able to make the network system more reliable. As for the bandwidth issue, Advantech offers a Broadcast Storm Filter and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Snooping/Query for multicast group management so as to optimize bandwidth utilization.

Conclusions:
This project was completed in thesummer of 2013 and Advantech’s high-quality products not only met the clients reliability requirements but have also passed a variety of tests such as operating during the hottest summer (the average ambient temperature exceeds +30°C). Even if the other supplier’s transformer fails, the EKI switches will still functioning and our professional advice helped the client to improve the performance of the unstable powersupply. This result won the customer’s trust and the System Integrator wants to have further cooperation with us due to Advantech’s comprehensive product lines and better service.
