Advantech’s Industrial Wireless Outdoor AP/Client Bridges

Wi-Fi is a networking technology that allows devices to communicate without wires. This technology has its origins in a 1985 ruling by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission that released several bands of the radio spectrum for unlicensed use. Wi-Fi uses both single-carrier direct-sequence spread spectrum radio technology and multi-carrier orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) radio technology. Many other countries later adopted these FCC regulations, enabling use of this technology worldwide.

In June 1997, IEEE finalized the initial standard for wireless LAN, IEEE 802.11. Wi-Fi enabled devices like PCs and mobile phones can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network. The coverage of interconnected access points can comprise an area as small as a few rooms or as large as a few square kilometers. As for industrial wireless networking applications, customers are always looking for rugged, reliable, weatherproof and waterproof devices that can be used in harsh outdoor environments.

According to VDC Research, the global market for the industrial wireless networking infrastructure products is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.4% from US $299.3 Millions in 2007 to US $928.1 Millions in 2012. In an effort to capitalize on this growing market, Advantech is currently developing a wide range of wireless enabled devices for use in many outdoor industrial applications worldwide.

Advantech offers three significant technologies for industrial applications in this field:

1. Daisy Chain Mesh:
Advantech’s Daisy Chain Mesh allows data routing to be fixed. In the event the AP node fails, the radio will search for another available path. The advantage of this mechanism is that it preserves more hardware resources and has efficient data transmission rates. Advantech’s Daisy Chain Mesh technology extends wireless coverage and maintains high throughput rates (12~15 Mbps) after five distant hops.

Please refer to the following diagram.

2. Ultra Fast Roaming:

In the past, mobile use of Wi-Fi over wider ranges was limited, for instance, use in an automobile moving from one hotspot to another was impossible. Now, Advantech’s Ultra Fast Roaming technology resolves this problem. The Ultra Fast Roaming technology provides a Handover Switching Time less than 10ms, allowing seamless video streaming or passenger information transmissions in moving environments (under 140 km/h).

3. Intelligent Bandwidth Management Mode:
By offering concurrent 802.11a and 802.11b/g dual or triple radio connectivity, the aggregate bandwidth available on the network increases, providing four intelligent bandwidth management modes, including trunking (bandwidth aggregation), smart traffic load balancing, one way transmissions, and failover redundancy. It provides reliable and robust wireless connectivity (EKI-6322AG dual radio and EKI-6323AG triple radio only).
Application:
Advantech’s industrial wireless outdoor solution is IP67 rated with a wide operating temperature designed for harsh outdoor scenarios:
  • Long range deployment (up to 33km)
  • Oil well, transducer, mining, irrigation system data transmission: transmit temperature, flow, pressure, load, displacement info to control center
  • Video surveillance or passenger information transmissions in moving environments under 140 km/h
  • Wi-Fi phone, hot zone applications at small area
  • Hazardous equipment monitoring system
  • Factory and machine automation
