Metro Station Fire Alarm System
Intelligent Transportation Beijing, China

Project Introduction: As large and fundamental facilities for commuting, metro stations are the backbone of transportation for many cities. Subway modernization has already become an important initiative for many countries. With excellent automation application experience, Advantech has successfully developed many railway applications. Beijing's 4th metro line is one of the busiest in the city, and securing that specific line with automated security and safety capabilities was a key importance for the government of China. Advantech helped develop an advanced Fire Alarm System (FAS) to provide automatic control and disaster prevention. This system will generate an alarm when disasters occur and can even help manage a crisis on its own through intelligent programming and the ability to take control of automated onsite equipment.

System Requirements:
With the span of 28.165 kilometers, the 4th metro line of Beijing runs lengthwise from north to south through the city proper. The metro line has adopted advanced automated systems, including an Automated Train Control System (ATC), Building Automation System (BAS), and Fire Alarm System (FAS). The Advantech designed FAS system is managed on two levels: main control (control center) and sub control (metro station, yard and depot). The disaster-prevention monitoring center in the control center is in charge of monitoring the operating status of all disaster-prevention equipment, receiving alarm signals, setting up relief commands, etc. In the event of a disaster, the station's disaster-prevention monitoring center will contact the commanding center, receive disaster-prevention commands and control the equipment. The following are requirements for the system's network application:
- All equipment should run stably in wide-range environment
- The backbone network should use redundant fiber optic ring with maximum self-healing time of 10 ms
- The device should be compact, rugged and DIN-rail mounted
- The communication equipment should be compatible with protection level IP30

System Description:
The communication & transmission network of the system is comprised of an independent fiber optic ring which can implement self-healing in 10 ms and setup a reliable communication platform when any communication failure occurs. If a disaster happens, the FAS system will implement detection and send out commands to switch smoke control system and other fire equipment from normal operation mode to disaster relief operation mode; it will coordinate its sub systems, such as traffic control system, disaster relief system and safety system, to keep the loss to a minimum.
Conclusion:
The subway FAS system focuses on fire alarm prevention and implements hierarchical control for control center, vehicle depot and parking lot. The communication network uses optical fiber optic ring and the hierarchical network construction ensures normal communication of the system when any single point of failure occurs to the network. |
