Project Introduction: As most people are aware, bus stops are not always the safest places to be waiting at night. They are sometimes located in dark areas that aren’t centrally located without a lot of pedestrian traffic nearby, which means they can frequently be prime locations for criminals to take advantage of commuters. But as many mass transit systems are being modernized, added security measures can easily be included to ensure improved safety and security.

System Requirements:

Advantech’s customer, Erreuno, was looking to update 40 bus stops across Avellino in Italy with modernized security systems that could provide commuters with a one-button press to reach a security attendant located in a central room. This attendant can monitor and view each bus stop to provide immediate response if necessary. This system required a robust and rugged network that could be linked to IP cameras, VoIP phones, safety buttons and HMI devices with reliable network capabilities.

System Description:
There is one simple system that has been applied to 40 bus stops consisting of a camera, a local HMI device, a microphone, and Advantech’s EKI-7659CI Industrial Ethernet Switch. The switches are installed in the security system column, and are activated by a simple press of a button. People can push the button on the column to easily reach an operator in a control room that can provide information and help. The redundant X-Ring created by the connected switches ensures that the network is always operational and ready to assist travels in need.

Conclusion:
Advanced technology allows many of our modern systems to be surprisingly simple, as is the case here. Though it only consists of a few devices, this remotely managed security system provides reliable communications from 40 locations to a central location, allowing passengers to travel with peace of mind, as information and security is only a button away.
