Thermal System with Parallel Operation of Boiler and Heat Pump
Application: Thermal System with Parallel Operation of Boiler and Heat Pump
Location: University Campus
Products Used: WebAccess Software

Project Introduction:
The students’ dormitory at the National Sun Yat-Sen University is a six-floor building in Taiwan with residential quarters and restaurants that accommodates about 700 people. The existing hot water system includes 2 diesel-fired boilers and a hot water container. As the existing diesel-fired system is not efficient and the annual budget for purchasing oil fuel has become a financial burden, the school has decided to add a heat pump system to be connected with the existing pipelines in order to save energy.

System Requirements:
The existing diesel boiler has a CoP (Coefficient of Performance) of 0.85, which, compared with today’s more advanced heat pump systems that often have a CoP greater than 2.6, is quite outdated. Considering costs and the payback period of investment, the school decided not to discard the diesel boiler system, but install an additional heat pump to improve the overall heating efficiency. Some historical documents in other countries indicate that through the use of a BEMS monitoring and control system, 10% of energy use can be saved. So, in this case we could just adopt Advantech’s WebAccess software to establish a real time BEMS system to increase the effectiveness of energy use.
System Diagram:

System Description:
The sensors (including those for temperature, flow and electricity consumption, etc.) send their data via an RS-485 network up to the gateway server which then transmits the data via a TCP/IP network to the monitoring control computer. The user can log in the WebAccess monitoring control web pages via the Internet. The system supports TCP/IP communication protocol with an open network structure, which allows for remote test and automatic monitoring control. The WebAccess monitoring control pages include real time operation data, historical trend and regression analyses.
Conclusion:
This project utilizes the monitoring control software WebAccess designed by Advantech to establish real time remote monitoring control web pages which are as simple and understandable as ordinary web pages on the Internet and can be easily operated by any user. Customers can read all the real time data about the improved hot water system, and with the help of the BEMS system customers can see the efficiency curves of the system derived from regression analyses of historical trends, so that they can implement more reliable maintenance of the equipment and keep it efficient. With the powerful integration capability provided by WebAccess, customers can save labor and energy costs and recover investment costs more quickly.
