Best Practices for Managing Asset Information

Although the effort required to develop and maintain accurate databases of currently deployed assets remains a major barrier to broader Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) adoption, solutions are appearing that address this critical issue, and EAM provides an ideal structure for organizing asset information.

Many of these solutions offer deep visualization tools that enhance stakeholder access to asset information. ARC considers the use of as EAM a Best Practice in Asset Information Management.

In a recent ARC Insight, Vice President Sid Snitkin says, "EAM systems use asset hierarchies to relate assets to component parts, to associated documentation, and to other assets in the same process. They also support enhanced asset visualization tools that facilitate rapid navigation through the information trees to access specific part, work order, and inventory information."

"This greatly extends the ability to use asset information for more effective planning and execution," according to Snitkin. "But even the most powerful EAM solution provides little support for developing a comprehensive and accurate asset information database that enables this functionality."

Trends in Hydraulic Actuator Technologies

Machine builders are continuing to push leading edge technology with each generation of machinery. It is all about creating a competitive advantage in the market. The industry has been forecasting the demise of hydraulic and pneumatic actuators in many machine segments as electronic servo suppliers seek to displace these devices.

In a recent ARC Insight, Senior Analyst Sal Spada says, "Manufacturers continue to spend millions of dollars each year on machinery used in their factories for automated production systems. Whether, it is an injection molding machine, machine tool, or robotic solution, the question is do equipment buyers get what they want or have they been compromised? The choices between electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuation are no longer so clear."

Plant Utilities: The Morning After

US electric deregulation and the crisis that followed it in California’s power markets produced a massive boom/bust cycle in the power generation equipment market. Equipment suppliers now face a return to historical business levels, or worse, due to the glut of new generating capacity.

Their response is to ramp up service offerings for the installed base. The dramatically changed business climate will offer upgrade and outsourcing opportunities for manufacturers with large electric utility plants.

ARC Senior Analyst Harry Forbes says, "Typical co-generating manufacturing operations in industries, such as basic chemicals, refining, and pulp and paper will find that power equipment suppliers are no longer too backlogged to pay close attention to their needs. They will also discover that there is a buyer’s market for many types of improvements and services to their utilities plants."

"Equipment suppliers such as GE, Siemens, and Alstom all need to pursue these opportunities to offset the sharp decline in revenues from new power equipment," according to Forbes. "They are creating new service offerings and are willing to take on new types of projects. These new offerings can also be structured so equipment suppliers bear some of the risk that manufacturers now hold as owner-operators of generating plants."
