Universal Network Controller UNO-2000 and Enterprise Information Automation Application

1. Demand and background of enterprises for embedded network platform

With the quick development of network technology, communication technology and "eAutomation" the informationalization path of enterprises also speeds up. However, during the process of enterprise information automation, large and medium national enterprises face the problem of integrating the existing DCS control information, status parameters and field information with enterprise information management to achieve the three-layer information system of ERP (enterprise resource planning), MES (manufacturing executive system) and PCS (production control system), and connecting the enterprise information management system seamlessly to the MIS and OA system. The most difficult problem lies in different DCS information interfaces ranging from RS-485, Profibus, DeviceNet, or CANbus. Thus, more customers are looking for an embedded platform which can collect DCS information and allow access to the information through the Ethernet. At the same time, the platform can integrate with different operating systems and industrial automation applications to provide the most effective environment of connecting field information to the enterprise network. This platform is equipped with the following features:

  • Embedded and compact design adaptable to industrial-critical environments;
  • Reliable platform based on PC technology and embedded operating systems;
  • Standard communication interfaces connecting PLC and I/O devices, such as RS-232/422/485 with automatic flow control;
  • Adaptable to industrial-critical environment Ethernet network
  • Built-in digital I/O for urgent event handling;
  • Embedded data gateway;

At present, industrial PC(IPC), the most widely used PC platform, leads PC technology to the automation era with open hardware/software, flexible system configuration and reduced system cost. However, due to the unstable nature of PC-based fan, hard disk, and Windows operating system, industrial PC is not recognized as a stable controller. So IPC is not the suitable information server connecting the factory to the enterprise information management system. Advantech's UNO-2000 series is one of the few reliable embedded platforms. It may be one of the most compact embedded platforms, easy to install in various types of equipments.

2 Features of UNO-2000 embedded network platform

The UNO-2000 series provides several models based on different applications:

  • UNO-2041 solution for embedded controller: x86 open architecture CPU with PC/104, 2 x RS-232, 2 x RS-232/485;
  • UNO-2059 solution for portable information server: GX1-300 CPU with PC card, LAN, 2 x USB, 4 x RS-232/485;
  • UNO-2053 solution for embedded data acquisition and communication data gateway: GX1-300 CPU with PC card, LAN, 2 x USB, 4 x RS-232/485
  • UNO-2052 solution for FCS: CANbus with 2 x CAN2.0A and CAN2.0B;
  • UNO-2161 solution for NCS: Equipped with PC/104 extension, which easily integrates with fieldbus communication modules, such as Profibus, DeviceNet, InterBus and Fieldbus Foundation, to provide the most powerful embedded platform. Integrating IEC61131, it is recognized as the most open, embedded industrial controller.

The UNO-2000 series has the following features:

  • Compact, embedded platform with excellent anti-shock and anti-vibration capabilities, especially suitable for industrial-critical environments. The operating temperature is 0 to 50°C. It can support unstable power supply from 10 to 30VDC and possesses power supply reverse connection protection. Besides that, the UNO-2000 series provides DIN-rail, panel/wall mounting kits, making installation more convenient.
  • A fanless and hard disk free operating platform with embedded operating systems, Microsoft WinCE & Linux.
  • There is no need to waste time and effort in developing onboard devices or using a Platform Builder to build a custom Windows® CE image. The UNO-2000 series does all that. Through the built-in runtime library and software development kit, the UNO-2000 series leverages your existing Windows-based programming skills to develop applications easily and efficiently. And you can upgrade programs via the Ethernet or RS-232.
  • The UNO-2000 series has multiple communication functionalities such as RS-232/422/485, Ethernet, PCMCIA, analog input, digital input/output, isolated digital input/output. The UNO-2000 series can easily meet industrial automation applications.

3 The UNO-2000 series application in steel plants

Steel plants have three main control systems: Hot Metal Pre-treatment, Converter, and Second-refiner. In order to improve productivity and enterprise management, administer manufacturing line, and optimize factory floor data management, it is essential to update the steel factory equipments The complete production process begins with Hot Metal Pre-treatment, two 80 ton Converters, RH and IR-UT Second-refiners until the hot carbon steel remains in the furnace. The process also includes relevant wastewater handling produced from furnace air emissions and coal gas purification. The second-refiner RH is a Vacuum Degassing Vessel, and IR-UT(Injection Refining--Up-Temperature) is a powder injection, up-temperature finery.

Among these, both the 80 ton DC electric cooker steel making and the production process of continuous cylindrical blooms casting adopt IPC and S7-300. Automation control system in steel making consists of three levels: the first level is equipment control including equipment testing; the second level is process control with computers; and the third level is factory line system (FLS). During the production process, computer control, including mathematic models, technical calculation, information gathering, information handling, information display and information recording, exchanges information with Equipment Control and FLS via network communication.

Because of the long and complicated process of steel-making, Process Control is separated into three subsystems according to the main three technical processes: Hot Metal Pre-treatment subsystem, Converter subsystem and Second-refiner subsystem. Each Process Control subsystem is equipped with a large IPC assuming the production control of the corresponding process. And an additional IPC is added to the Converter subsystem as a standby and testing IPC.

As the large control systems for steel making are all whole sets of control systems, we only add a few controllers in some control processes to streamline facilities. For example, during the process of Hot Metal Pre-treatment, two ADAM-5510 are added in order to monitor the on/off status of some relays and contactors, and control the fan of the dust elimination system. The Hot Metal Pre-treatment subsystem adopts several large PLCs with RS-485 communication ports, so the UNO-2059 embedded network platform was selected for its strong data handling and communication control capabilities. The UNO-2059 collects control information via RS-485, and connects to industrial-grade data gateway through its Ethernet port, hence achieves seamless connection between the factory floor and the enterprise.

In the Second-refiner process, the steel plant adopts a whole set of control system with DeviceNet. In the system, an attached module, the CAN Controller and other ADAM-4000 modules are added for further monitoring. In order to achieve an integral information network, we adopted UNO-2160, which converts DeviceNet protocol to Ethernet to achieve integration of the bottom layer control information with the management information.

In the Converter process, due to the large amount of information, control facilities, complicated techniques, most local controllers employ Profibus. Therefore, UNO-2160 was installed to achieve information communication. As Profibus lacks openness, many production parameters, control parameters, and especially some important control I/O point status can not be retrieved from the former control system. So we added the PC-based ADAM-5511 to collect some control status parameters combined with the former DCS.

With IDE interface, UNO-2160 can install an additional HDD, and Windows CE provides powerful technology support. Thus, Windows CE has been installed in the two UNO-2160, embedded with enterprise firewall functionality to protect local control units (LCU).
