Industrial Cameras Aid High Quality Manufacturing and Productivity
4/2/2018

In the age of automation and smart factories, classic machine vision is the cornerstone of success for the imaging industry. CMOS technology and fast processing enable real-time precision, while cognitive vision solutions using artificial intelligence are the basis for further growth.

The Advantech Quartz industrial camera series covers the most popular 0.3 ~ 5.0 mega pixel spectrum range that offers value and ultra-fast speeds in a very small housing. The popular Gigabit Ethernet interface series comes with a 100-meter cable and all quartz cameras come with an option to provide camera power and data via a single cable. They also offer separate input/output ports for triggering events or flash control.

Automation in manufacturing and agriculture are the main application fields for imaging. With the application of artificial intelligence growing, more and more demands will come from robotics and scientific applications. Meanwhile, electronics, mechanical engineering, and measurement technology continue to dominate both production and sales. Other significant verticals for manufacturers are the food and beverage, print and packaging, security and surveillance, and logistics industries.

Application - Real-time Image Acquisition and Synchronous Multiple Object Identification Speeds Up Productivity in Food and Beverage Industry

  • Background Overview:

Food safety issues are getting more attention in the food and beverage and packaging industry. Traceability is the ability to verify the history and location of an item by means of a documented and recorded identification process so that goods can be recalled based on precise dates/times and exact location. One of the world's leading providers of beverage containers wanted to identify the bar codes, characters, and numbers on ink-jet printing labels at a 7-unit per second run rate with 99.9% correctness. Since there were not enough engineers to staff every factory, the customer wanted to implement a reliable system with a user friendly graphical interface.

  • Solution:

Advantech provided a PC-based automated optical identification system with multiple cameras to identify the bar code, data code, and characters on the beverage container. The system comprises the VPS-3100, a 2-port GigE vision system with Intel® N3160 processor and QCAM-GM0640-120CE, a 0.3 megapixel industrial camera, featuring Power over Ethernet cabling to simplify deployment and maintenance.

  • Why Advantech:
1. Ideal solution for tracking uniformly dispersed ingredients, overall product quality, and diversion of flawed products

2. Customized vision integration systems eliminate label mix-ups, recalls, and imperfect products

3. PC-based solutions with vision software equipped for 1D barcode, date code, and OCR for increased efficiency
